By Vice President Randy Walters
April 16, 2012

Station 50 was paged out for a vehicle fire on Scotts Factory road that turned out to be two vans fully engulfed. Eng 51 and 53 extinguished the fires, 502 (Asst Chief Edwards)and 503 (Asst Chief Hackney) were also on scene. This was followed by a third van fire that came in as a structure fire. Sta 50 and Sta 30 responded Eng 51, Eng 53, Rescue 50, 502 and 503 and Tanker 30. The van was fully involved and a small brush fire was started as well before the blazed was extinguished. Rescue 50 and Eng 53 also investigated the structural damage at Pons Store and Mill Swamp Baptist Church and determined the buldings were structural sound.

A vandalism rampage

By Diana McFarland
News editor

A pair of torched church vans and a wrecked church gym were just two targets of an hours-long crime spree that began early Monday morning.

At the center of the investigation is a young white male who fled from Isle of Wight County Sheriff's deputies attempting a traffic stop prior to the damage being reported.

The juvenile was arrested late Monday and charged with traffic violations, including felony evading and eluding police.

There were no charges filed in connection with the string of vandalisms and the investigation is ongoing, according to the Isle of Wight County Sheriff's Office.

The suspect, or suspects, set fire to two vans at Sandy Mount Baptist Church, located at 16091 Scotts Factory Road, at about 4:10 a.m. About an hour and a half later, a suspect, or suspects, hit a parked trailer and bus and crashed through the gym at Mill Swamp Baptist Church.

Shortly after the attack on the gym, an unknown vehicle ran into the side of Pons Store on Mill Swamp Road. The vehicle left the scene, according to the Isle of Wight County Sheriff's Office.

Down the road at 8128 Mill Swamp Road, a white 2002 Dodge van was found fully engulfed in flames.

The van was stolen from the 15800 block of Scott's Factory Road — the same road where Sandy Mount Baptist Church is located.

The next target — a parked vehicle was hit in the 10100 block of Hall Town Road — was reported to authorities at 6:28 a.m.

About seven minutes later, the Sheriff's Office received a call that someone tried to set fire to a parked vehicle in the 15800 block of Scotts Factory Road.

The time of that event is not known, according to the Sheriff's Office....

Deputies: Events spanned three hours

ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WAVY) - Deputies in Isle of Wight County have arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with a pursuit in the county. He has not been connected to the crime spree which spanned three hours early Monday morning.

Capt. Rick Gaddis, with the Isle of Wight County Sheriff's Office, said the chain of events began around 3:30 a.m. when a deputy spotted a gold Chevy pickup truck driving without its headlights in the 600 block of West Main Street in Smithfield. When the deputy turned on the lights and sirens in their squad car, the truck sped away.

During a pursuit, the vehicle suddenly stopped and a young, black female got out of the truck and ran, Gaddis said.

The driver of the truck, described as a young, white male wearing a blue hoodie and light colored jeans, continued to flee in the truck until the pursuit ended on Great Springs Road. According to Gaddis, the driver got out of the truck and ran into the woods.

A detention order was issued for the 16-year-old male for evading and eluding police. A detention order is the same as an arrest warrant, Gaddis said.

Deputies are investigating whether the teen was involved in the following incidents:

At 4:41 a.m., deputies were called to the scene of two church vans set on fire at Sandy Mount Baptist Church, located at 16091 Scotts Ferry Road.

Then, at 5:25 a.m., deputies received word an unknown vehicle had slammed through the gymnasium of the Mill Swamp Baptist Church at 6329 Mill Swamp Road. The vehicle crashed through a wall, across the gym floor and out another wall.

Less than 20 minutes later at 5:40 a.m., deputies were called to Pons Store, located at 7458 Mill Swamp Road after a vehicle crashed into a wall of the store. The vehicle left the scene.

Just two minutes after, a 2002 white Dodge van was found fully engulfed in flames at 8128 Mill Swamp Road. Gaddis said the van had been reported stolen earlier from the 15700 block of Scotts Factory Road.

A parked vehicle was then struck in the 10100 block of Hall Town Road just before 6:30 a.m.

About 15 minutes later at 6:43 a.m., someone tried to set a parked vehicle on fire in the 15800 block of Scotts Factory Road and another "leaving the scene of an accident" call went to deputies in the 12300 block of Raynor Road.

Sometime between 6:25 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., five mailboxes were reported to be damaged on Raynor Road and Comet Road.

Gaddis said deputies believe each crime is related because of times and proximity as well as several leads.

The teen is charged with felony evading and eluding police.

Deputies have also identified the female involved, who is also a juvenile, but she was not called a suspect.

No charges have been filed at this time when it comes to the string of vandalisms. Anyone with information should contact the Isle of Wight County Sheriff's Office.
