By Lieutenant Jeremy Asencio
August 5, 2019

At 10:13am Station 50, 60, and Battalion 1 (Asst. Chief Kempton) were dispatched to an Accident with Unknown Injuries. Initial comments indicated 4 to 5 vehicles involved, including a head-on collision with a dump truck. Rescue 50 (Capt. Balius) and Engine 51 (Lt. Asencio) both responded with 4 personnel, along with 521 (Past Chief Hackney) and 506 (Capt. Deiterich). Batt.1 arrived established command and confirmed 1 trapped, car vs. garbage truck. R50 handled extrication, E51 split their crew to man a cover line and to check for other injuries and hazards. A significant fluids leak was identified. Due to the amount of fluid and being on a bridge the run off had gone in the waterway below. One of our members (a Hazardous Materials Specialist) directed mitigation and made notifications to proper regional and state authorities. With an extended on scene time, E52 and E53 were manned and covered the town. Assisted on scene by EMS2, Medic 62, 64, and Smithfield PD.
